1X1 CHICAGO: Celebrating Women in Architecture

Illinois Institute of Technology College of Architecture is excited to announce 1X1 CHICAGO: Celebrating Women in Architecture! This Fall, our city’s women in architecture will be celebrated in a month-long exhibition in S.R. Crown Hall along with weekly events. Special exhibits featuring some of IL Tech’s trailblazing female architects and expert panel discussions looking backward and forward at the empowerment of women in architecture in Chicago will be open to the public.
Join us at 1X1 CHICAGO to recognize the work of women in architecture in Chicago and support the International Archive of Women in Architecture Center’s 1x1 initiative to collect and preserve their submission toward building a more inclusive vision and history of architecture.

1x1 CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
The International Archive of Women in Architecture (IAWA), in collaboration with Illinois Institute of Technology, invites submissions by Chicago’s female architects–
- an original drawing or flat piece authored that represents a breakthrough or revelatory moment in her education or career (inclusive of all non-conventional career paths)
- a handwritten paragraph describing how this work marked a turning point in their education or professional practice
All donated pieces will be showcased at the 1X1 CHICAGO: Celebrating Women in Architecture exhibition opening on August 7, 2025, at Illinois Tech’s S.R. Crown Hall in Chicago. Following the exhibition, all contributions will be permanently preserved in the 1x1 Collection at the IAWA center at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. The contributions will also be published in an exhibit catalog.
Eligibility: Open to all women in architecture educated and/or professionally active in the Chicago area. Contributors may be licensed or unlicensed, and currently practicing, traveling alternative paths, or retired. Contributors need not currently live in Chicago.
