Susana Torre

(1944)
  • (IAWA Collection Ms1990-016)

Susana Torre was born in Argentina and graduated from the University of Buenos Aires with a degree in architecture and additional coursework in urban planning in 1967. In 1968, she moved to the United States to pursue postgraduate studies in urban planning at Columbia University. Torre worked in several firms in New York City before establishing an independent practice, Susana Torre and Associates of New York, in 1989.

Throughout her career, Torre has been concerned with the status of women in architecture, studying the history of the subject and advocating for fuller participation of women in the field. She led the four-year survey project that resulted in the creation of the Archive of Women in Architecture, along with the accompanying exhibition and book Women in American Architecture: A Historic and Contemporary Perspective. An inaugural board member of IAWA, her collection includes "A Selection of Project Reviews and Writings" (1977–88) by Torre, as well as research and academic papers, photographs, drawings, and a model of a house she designed in 1987 in Amagansett, New York.
